There will be a point in your life where you realise that you need to get fit – be it trimming jelly bellies, building muscles, aiming to pass IPPT, or simply to improve your lifestyle amidst busy schedules. To get fit, you have to change the way you eat and get your body moving even more frequently. However, during the endeavour to reach the fitness goal, one will definitely encounter obstacles along the way which drain your motivation to continue. Here are 10 obstacles which are likely to occur.

  1. Unhealthy foods are always more appealing than healthier alternatives. To cut down fatty food intake can only mean that you have to put in effort to resist the appeal of these food. And occasionally, our taste buds will have some form of craving for these kinds of food or another. This is even worse when…

  2. You give in easily to bad social pressure and influence. When you try to get into a healthy lifestyle, your friends and family will have to adapt to your change too. However, there are a few who are indifferent and will continue tempting you into living your usual unhealthy lifestyle. The only solution to this would be to stay away from these influences. Even so…

  3. Media is everywhere to demotivate you. Advertisements and offers for delicious set meals and buffets are almost everywhere, which further emphasises the first obstacle mentioned. On the other hand, slimming commercials can make it seem so easy to slim down. More often than not, these advertised “results” are works produced from CG effects and photo-editing software, which are unreflective of the amount of effort one has to put in to obtain a healthy body. These commercials, therefore, can cause people to be…

  4. Setting unrealistic expectations and goals. We always picture ourselves being able to train hard weekly, and vision ourselves eating healthy food. It seemed easy on paper, yet it is difficult when we actually do these things. This will discourage us, but not to worry - with goals that seemed too big at first, one can break the process towards the goal into small steps. But you have to be careful, because one can fall into the trap of…

  5. Over-rewarding oneself for doing little things. Going to your first session of gym meant that you finally made the first steps into attaining a healthier body. But if you think that is good enough to be rewarded with a buffet, you’ll find yourself living the same unhealthy lifestyle you once started out. Rewards should be just enough for motivating you to become healthier, and not making up for the sacrifice you made to make a positive change to your lifestyle. In fact…

  6. Results are difficult to be seen even after a long time. A person can be training for months, but his or her jelly belly does not shrink stubbornly. However, it is good to know that the person is able to become more active in life. These kinds of innate benefits are really hard to be seen on the surface, and it takes maturity and awareness to fully understand the goodness a healthy lifestyle bring us. After all…

  7. Habit, itself, is hard to change. You have to step out of your comfort zone, to live a way of life that is different from what you used to, and to have a schedule that takes time and effort to adjust to. This is especially so when it’s not well-aligned with your belief, when the driving force is not as strong as when you want to do other things. On the other hand, if you give up on getting fit…

  8. The guilt you feel when you continue an unhealthy lifestyle will become the very demoralising factor. You might blame yourself for not putting in the effort to live a healthy life, but at the same time putting the effort to make this positive change can be really tiring. As you face this struggle…

  9. There will be unavoidable obstacles like accidents, periods, religious obligations, illnesses, etc. There is a lot of compromise and work to be done to make space for these occurrences, and they can sap your energy to achieve your goal. It is still fine if one can adjust to it, but take caution when you are…

  10. Resting When one takes a break, one can ultimately have more energy to travel a longer distance in his/her endeavour. Yet, no matter how harmless it seems, it carries a huge potential to become a trap that completely breaks your routine. These days, there can be stories of people taking a few days of break, thinking that they will continue later and only to find themselves unable to continue again due to having a huge inertia. That’s when obstacles 6-9 return to form a vicious cycle again.

Even if the obstacles haunts people frequently, there are a lot of success stories out in the world. Most of these stories share a common belief – to have the perseverance to achieve the things you want. It can be cliché, but the effectiveness of being persistent is the very reason for its cliché-ness.

In fact, trying out a healthier lifestyle is not only a physical struggle, but also a mental struggle. It is your desire to extend your physical limits, and ultimately make your outlook in life better. While being fit is not something that can be done immediately when said, it can start from very simple actions such as taking the stairs instead of riding escalators.

After all, the only workout that is unhealthy is the one that is undone.
